Hello and welcome to the Trout Lake Community Centre Artist Residency blog!
My name is Nathaniel Marchand and I'll be the artist in residence for 2023. I'm excited to have been selected for this opportunity, a long running initiative by the city called Artist in Communities.
For over a decade I have incorporated community arts in my practice, facilitating a wide variety workshops and programs in communities across Canada. These have ranged from photography and filmmaking, to illustration and sound recording, but my primary focus has been on hosting workshops exploring natural materials and connections to the land. Natural dyeing, paper making and ink making, in-situ environmental art installations, sound walks and spore printing workshops have bridged my personal interest in nature and art, as well as my passion for fostering community and creativity.
I have lived in Vancouver for three years now and have already had the opportunity to work with so many great community and art organizations. When I first moved here I lived just a few blocks away from Trout Lake. Hearing people jamming on their instruments, seeing groups of friends enjoying picnics, playing basketball and tennis at the community centre, watching the ducks chase one another against a backdrop of North Van mountains; I loved having access to such a beautiful urban park in my neighbourhood.
Over the next year I will host a variety of pop up workshops that will celebrate the unique social ecology of the park and its surrounding area. Through natural ink making, storytelling and mask making, land stewardship and bird house building and other programs, I hope to celebrate the park, its landscape and the people that use it.
To learn more about the upcoming workshops you can follow me here, or read about and sign up for programs on the Trout Lake Community Centre website and brochures.
